Rolex Explorer II Ref. 216570-0001 - Mamic 1970

Designed for extremes. The Explorer II in Oystersteel with a white dial: 42mm of reliability and robustness to explore the unknown.

OYSTER PERPETUAL EXPLORER II

Extreme environments, such as the polar regions, have always been real-life proving grounds for Oyster watches. The Explorer II is natural heir to the Explorer as a reliable guide, a tool and a companion for explorers, speleologists and vulcanologists. When it was launched in 1971, the Explorer II set new standards for chronometric precision, strength, autonomy and clarity. It features a distinctive 24-hour hand, an invaluable aid to distinguish daytime hours from night around the poles and beneath ground.

LEGENDARY LEGIBILITY

The Explorer II has the hallmarks of the ideal instrument to push the boundaries of exploration. A robust 42 mm case in 904L steel with bold numerals on its bezel distinguishes the latest generation launched in 2011. Its Chromalight display features broad hour and minute hands, as well as a 24-hour hand that has reverted to the clear arrow shape and orange colour of the distinctive 1971 original.

The Explorer II highly legible dial, extremely resistant Oystersteel and waterproofness have made it the watch for the extremes.

24-HOUR BEZEL

The Explorer II is equipped with an additional 24-hour display; a dedicated hand circles the dial in 24 hours rather than the usual 12, pointing to a fixed bezel with 24 hour graduations. This function enables the wearer to distinguish the hours of the day from the hours of the night, an essential feature for those who venture into environments where darkness reigns supreme – such as in the depths of caves, or where the sun never sets – like the polar regions in summer.

WHITE DIAL AND CHROMALIGHT DISPLAY

The Explorer II features a date display, an additional orange 24-hour hand and a fixed bezel with 24-hour graduations, enabling day to be distinguished from night. It became the watch of choice for speleologists, volcanologists and polar explorers. Its hour markers and hands feature a highly-legible Chromalight display with long-lasting blue luminescence.

The high-contrast Chromalight display on the dial innovates by pushing the boundaries of visibility in dark environments. The blue glow of the hour markers and hands lasts up to 8 hours with a uniform luminosity throughout, practically twice as long as that of standard luminescent materials.

OYSTER BRACELET

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex. This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.

Robust and comfortable metal Oyster bracelet, with broad, flat three-piece links is the most universal bracelet in the Oyster collection.

OYSTER CASE

The Explorer II Oyster case, guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet), is a paragon of robustness and reliability. The characteristically shaped middle case is crafted from a solid block of particularly corrosion-resistant Oystersteel. The case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that grants only Rolex watchmakers access to the movement. The winding crown, fitted with the Twinlock double waterproofness system, screws down securely against the case. The crystal is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire. The waterproof Oyster case provides the Explorer II high-precision movement with optimal protection.

OYSTERSTEEL

Rolex uses Oystersteel for its steel watch cases. Specially developed by the brand, Oystersteel belongs to the 904L steel family, alloys most commonly used in high-technology and in the aerospace and chemical industries, where maximum resistance to corrosion is essential. Oystersteel is extremely resistant and maintains its beauty even in the harshest environments.

3187 MOVEMENT

The Explorer II is equipped with calibre 3187, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. In addition to the conventional hour, minute and seconds hands, it features a 24-hour hand to display a second time zone. The 3187 is fitted with a Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers, offering greater resistance to shocks and to extreme conditions. Like all Rolex Perpetual movements, the 3187 is a certified Swiss chronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests. Its architecture, in common with all Oyster watch movements, makes it singularly reliable.

3187 movement offers a power reserve of approximately 48 hours.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION

Like all Rolex watches, each Explorer II is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This exclusive designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. These certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day, or more than twice that required of an official chronometer.

The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.
