Rolex Day-Date 40 Ref. 228206 is made of the noblest metal, 950 platinum. Rare and precious, considered the noblest of metals, platinum is striking for its silvery whiteness and its vibrant luminosity that perfectly matches the prestige of the watches it carries.
EXCLUSIVITY ACCORDING TO ROLEX
At its launch in 1956, the Day-Date was a major innovation: it was the first calendar wristwatch to indicate, in addition to the date, the day of the week spelt out in full in an arc-shaped window at 12 o’clock – a technical feat at the time. The indication of the day of the week is available in a choice of 26 languages. Watches in the Day-Date range are made only in precious metals – 18 ct yellow, white or Everose gold or 950 platinum.
Worn by many of the world’s political figures, directors and visionaries, the Day-Date is instantly recognizable, in particular thanks to its emblematic President bracelet, whose evocative name, together with the eminent figures who have worn it, ensured the Day-Date became known as the “presidents’ watch”.
Like all models in the prestigious Day-Date range, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40 is made only of precious metals. In addition to the date, it indicates the day of the week spelt out in full in a window on the dial.
“PRESIDENTS” WATCH
The Day-Date has always represented the summit of the Rolex art of watchmaking. The exceptional precision, reliability, legibility and presence of this model have made it the ultimate status watch. The Rolex Day-Date has been worn by many presidents, leaders and visionaries worldwide. It is highly distinctive, in particular thanks to its emblematic President bracelet with an evocative name that, together with the eminent figures who have worn it, ensured the Day-Date became known as the “presidents’ watch”.
The Rolex Day-Date is a watch like no other. A true watchmaking icon since 1956, Rolex’s most prestigious model is universally know as the “presidents’ watch”, chosen by the world’s great names for its performance and exceptional presence.
ICE BLUE DIAL
The dial is the distinctive face of a Rolex watch, the feature most responsible for its identity and readability. Characterised by hour markers fashioned from 18 ct gold to prevent tarnishing, every Rolex dial is designed and manufactured in-house, largely by hand to ensure perfection.
The deconstructed Roman numerals of the Day-Date 40 Ref. 22826 model are made of 18 ct white gold and polished one by one, on both sides. The craftsman operates in the dark with a light directed only at the component, to ensure a level of finish and reflection that no machine could achieve.
For the uninitiated, platinum can be difficult to recognise. But for those in the know, the ice blue dial is the discreet and exclusive signature of a Rolex platinum watch.
PRESIDENT BRACELET
The design, development and production of Rolex bracelets and clasps, as well as the stringent tests they face, involve advanced high technology. And, as with all the components of the watch, aesthetic controls by the human eye guarantee impeccable beauty. The President bracelet, with its semi-circular three piece links, was created in 1956 for the launch of the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date. It represents the ultimate in refinement and comfort and is always made of carefully selected precious metals.
It takes one full day to polish and satin-finish the President bracelet of a Day-Date 40 in platinum, link by link, all by hand.
PLATINUM, RARE AND PRECIOUS
Rare and precious, platinum is striking for its silvery whiteness and vibrant luminosity. It is among the densest and heaviest metals in the world, distinguished by unique chemical and physical properties such as exceptional corrosion resistance. Paradoxically, it is also soft, elastic and highly malleable, which makes machining and polishing especially difficult, demanding an extremely high degree of skill. Rolex always uses 950 platinum, an alloy consisting of 950‰ (thousandths) platinum, painstakingly crafted in-house by the fine metalworkers at Rolex. The noblest of metals for the finest of watches.

OYSTER CASE, SYMBOL OF WATERPROOFNESS
A paragon of robustness and elegance, the Oyster case of the Day-Date 40 Ref. 228206 is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). Its middle case is crafted from a solid block of Everose gold. The case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. The winding crown, fitted with the Twinlock double waterproofness system, screws down securely against the case. The crystal is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and is fitted with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimum protection for the Day-Date 40’s high-precision movement.

3255 MOVEMENT
The Day-Date 40 Ref. 228206 is equipped with a new-generation movement, calibre 3255, entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex for a superlative level of performance. This self-winding mechanical movement is at the forefront of the art of watchmaking. A consummate demonstration of Rolex technology, with 14 patents, it offers fundamental gains in terms of precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetism, ease of use and reliability.
Calibre 3255 offers a power reserve of approximately 70 hours.
SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION
Like all Rolex watches, each Day-Date is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This exclusive designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. These certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day, or more than twice that required of an official chronometer.
The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.
