A WEALTH OF EXPERTISE

An elegant watch for frequent travellers, the Sky-Dweller displays the time in two time zones simultaneously and has an annual calendar. The reference time, in 24-hour format, is shown via an off-centre disc, and the local time is read using conventional centre hands. The annual calendar, named Saros, automatically differentiates between 30- and 31-day months. It is operated by a patented mechanism and stands out for its innovative display: the months of the year are indicated in 12 apertures around the circumference of the dial, with the current month marked in red. The instantaneous date change is linked to the local time.

The disc’s 24-hour display allows travellers to clearly distinguish daytime hours from night-time hours in the distant time zone.

CHOCOLATE DIAL AND CHROMALIGHT DISPLAY

A fixed inverted red triangle on the dial points to the chosen reference time – the time at home or at the traveller’s usual workplace – on the off-centre 24-hour disc. At a glance, this 24-hour display clearly distinguishes daytime hours from night-time hours in the other time zone. The dials now feature rectangular index hour markers and longer hands, as well as a Chromalight display with long-lasting luminescence, which enhances legibility.

A deep red rectangle in one of the 12 windows around the dial indicated the current month, a striking characteristic of the Saros annual calendar. This ingenious mechanism simplifies life for the wearer of the watch, who no longer needs to think about adjusting the date at the end of a 30-day month. The annual calendar displays the correct date through the year. Only one adjustment is needed – on 1 March (February having only 28 or 29 days). The date is connected to local time and automatically changes according to the traveller’s local time zone.

FLUTED BEZEL

The Rolex fluted bezel is a mark of distinction. Originally, the fluting of the Oyster bezel had a functional purpose: it served to screw the bezel onto the case helping to ensure the waterproofness of the watch. It was therefore identical to the fluting on the case back, which was also screwed onto the case for waterproofness, using specific Rolex tools. Over time, the fluting became an aesthetic element, a genuine Rolex signature feature. Today the fluted bezel is a mark of distinction, always in gold.

EVEROSE GOLD

Rolex gold is like no other. It is made of only the purest metals, meticulously inspected in an in-house laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment. These metals are alloyed by fusion in a crucible at over 1,000 °C, according to closely guarded formulas to produce the 18 ct yellow, white and Everose gold alloys specific to Rolex.

To preserve the beauty of its pink gold watches, Rolex created and patented a new alloy that it casts in its own foundry: Everose gold, which owes its unique colour – a pink hue unlike any other – to its composition. Introduced in 2005, it is used on all Rolex pink gold watches, as well as on a special blend of materials, the Everose Rolesor.

9001 MOVEMENT

The Sky-Dweller is equipped with calibre 9001, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Introduced in 2012, it is one of the most complex calibres ever created by Rolex watchmakers. Nonetheless, it is engineered to ensure simplicity of use: a selector wheel on the outside edge of the 9001 ensures the interaction of the movement and the bezel of the watch to set the Sky-Dweller’s functions.

Like all Rolex Perpetual movements, the 9001 is a certified Swiss Chronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests. Its architecture, in common with all Oyster watch movements, makes it singularly reliable.

Calibre 9001 offers a power reserve of approximately 72 hours.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION

Like all Rolex watches, each Sky-Dweller is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This exclusive designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. These certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day, or more than twice that required of an official chronometer.

The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.
