The light reflections on the case sides and lugs highlight the elegant profile of the 31 mm Oyster case, which is fitted with a diamond-set bezel. Aesthetically, the Datejust has spanned eras, while retaining the enduring codes that make it, notably in its traditional versions, one of the most recognized and recognizable of watches.

TIMELESS STYLE

The Rolex Datejust is the archetype of the classic watch thanks to functions and aesthetics that never go out of fashion. Born in 1945, it was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at 3 o’clock on the dial – hence its name. It consolidated all the major innovations that the brand had contributed to the modern wristwatch until then – chronometric precision (first chronometer certificates granted to a Rolex wristwatch as of 1910), waterproofness (creation of the Oyster case in 1926) and the self-winding mechanism (Perpetual rotor patented in 1931).

MALACHITE DIAL AND DIAMOND BEZEL

Malachite is a natural ornamental stone that Rolex has already used for certain dials in the past, for example on a Cellini model in 1976 and on Oyster watches in the early 1980s. Rolex chose malachite for its intense green colour, the beauty of its structure and the fact that it is an exceptional stone that marries perfectly with yellow gold in particular; the perfect combination of Rolex’s two emblematic colours.

Gem-setters, like sculptors, finely carve the precious metal to hand-shape the seat in which each gemstone will be perfectly lodged. With the art and craft of a jeweller, the stone is placed and meticulously aligned with the others, then firmly secured in its gold or platinum setting. Besides the intrinsic quality of the stones, several other criteria contribute to the beauty of Rolex gem-setting: the precise alignment of the height of the gems, their orientation and position, the regularity, strength and proportions of the setting as well as the intricate finishing of the metalwork. A sparkling symphony to enhance the watch and enchant the wearer.

Rolex chose malachite for its intense green colour and the beauty of its structure that marries perfectly with 18 ct yellow gold and diamond bezel.

THE PRESIDENT BRACELET

The design, development and production of Rolex bracelets and clasps, as well as the stringent tests they face, involve advanced high technology. And, as with all the components of the watch, aesthetic controls by the human eye guarantee impeccable beauty. The President bracelet, with its semi-circular three piece links, was created in 1956 for the launch of the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date. It represents the ultimate in refinement and comfort and is always made of carefully selected precious metals.

The President bracelet of Datejust 31 Ref. 278288RBR is made of 18 ct yellow gold.

2236 MOVEMENT

The calibre 2236 is a new-generation self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Fitted with a Syloxi hairspring in silicon, patented by Rolex, it offers a superlative level of chronometric performance. Insensitive to magnetic fields, the Syloxi hairspring provides great stability in the face of temperature variations and remains up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. Its patented geometry ensures its regularity in any position.

Calibre 2236 offers a power reserve of approximately 55 hours.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION

Like all Rolex watches, the Datejust 31 is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This exclusive designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. These certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day, or more than twice that required of an official chronometer.

The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.
