Watches tell the world a bit about who you are, and they can, if you’re lucky, connect you to the people in your life that matter most.
Matt Hranek
Author Matt Hranek, an inveterate watch enthusiast with a passion for fine design, photographer, director and editor, put on the first pages of the book the story about his own Rolex Datejust. Matt Hranek didn’t buy the watch, his father did when he wanted to celebrate the success of the first year of his own business and Matt inherit the watch after his father suddenly died when Matt was just 18 years old.
Through these intimate Matt Hranek’s storytelling, not just about his own watch but also about a wide range of watches which belong to interesting personas, the watches become more than just timepieces and status symbols. Ralph Lauren’s, Elvis Presley’s, John F. Kennedy’s, Andy Warhol’s, Sylvester Stallone’s watches and many others are presented in this unique book.
One very interesting watch adorns the covers of the book: Paul Newman’s Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. But this time is not about famous Paul Newman’s Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, Matt Hranek brings the story about the much less well-known Daytona which Paul Newman was given by his wife Joanne Newman to replace his first Daytona which Newman had given to their oldest daughter Nell’s boyfriend in 1984. Needless to say, this is the sort of watch to make any watch enthusiast have an attack of the vapours.
I’ve paged through stacks of books on the history of watches… But I hadn’t come across a book that actually moved me until I picked up A Man and His Watch. The volume is filled with heartfelt stories.
